A veneer is a thin shell of dental porcelain, custom made to fit over the front surface of a tooth. Veneers are most often placed on the six to ten teeth visible when you smile.
The process is deliberate. Dr. Holt begins with photographs, a digital scan, and a conversation about what you want to change and what you want to keep, because the best veneers still look like you. A small amount of enamel, usually less than a millimeter, is smoothed to make room for the porcelain. You wear natural looking temporaries while a ceramist crafts your final veneers by hand.

Before anything is bonded permanently, you see the veneers in place, in natural light, in a mirror, and you take your time. Adjustments to shade or shape happen then, at the lab, not after. Only when you are genuinely happy do we bond them, and bonded porcelain is strong enough to last many years.

How it unfolds, step by step
Design consultation
Photographs, a digital scan, and an unhurried conversation about what you would change. Dr. Holt often shows a wax or digital mock up so you can preview the proposed shapes before anything begins.
Preparation and temporaries
With your teeth comfortably numb, a thin layer of enamel is smoothed to make room for the porcelain. We scan the prepared teeth and place polished temporaries, so you leave looking natural the same day.
Try in and refinement
Two to three weeks later, your handcrafted veneers arrive. We place them temporarily so you can study the shade and shape in daylight, and we send back anything that is not exactly right.
Bonding and polish
Once you approve them, each veneer is bonded with a strong resin cement, the bite is checked carefully, and the margins are polished smooth. You leave with your finished smile that afternoon.
Caring for it afterward
Bonded porcelain is strong and stain-resistant, and a few habits help it last many years:
- Brush and floss as usual; veneered teeth still need care along the gumline
- Avoid biting hard objects like ice, pens, or fingernails, which can chip porcelain
- Wear a nightguard if you clench or grind, to protect the edges
- Use a non-abrasive toothpaste to keep the polish bright
- Keep your regular cleanings so we can check the margins and fit

With good home care and regular checkups, ten to fifteen years is typical, and many last longer. Porcelain resists staining better than natural enamel. A nightguard is a sensible addition if you clench or grind, and we will tell you honestly if you do.
